Straw crucifix from Mexico
Straw Crucifix
Mexico c. 20th century
Straw, 12 inches

This type of crucifix is sold during Holy Week in Mexico and in some of the states along the border. The general demeanor of the suffering Christ is taken from many of the crucifixes that traveled to the New World from Spain. More obvious when new, around the head is a three rayed nimbus as a form of cruciform halo as well as a reminder of the trinity. The most curious feature is the mask worn by Christ, which is believed to indicate that the person has been transformed into the spirit of the deity portrayed. Use of the mask may also be an easier way to indicate a face using straw.
