First Mass in Brazil Brazil, c. 2000 Commemorative Souvenir Stamp The Portugeuse celebrated the first mass in Brazil on April 26, 1500, conducted by Franciscan Friar Henrique de Coimbra. This painting by Vitor Meireles and other paintings on the subject show a peaceful scene. The planting of a cross was a way of claiming the territory for God and country. Corresponding with the five hundred year anniversary, the Roman Catholic Church issued an apology for acts against the native peoples and the slaves who were brought to the country.
