Christ Almighty Savior Ukraine, c. 19th century Bronze and enameled icon, 5 x 3 inches Bronze and enameled icons were very popular for home and private devotions throughout Russia up until the early 20th century. The form had especial appeal for its durability and that it was purified and formed by fire and therefore not shaped by human hands. The cruciform halo appeared very early in Christian iconography as a visual reminder of the incarnation of God in man. The Greek letters stand for "the one who is." The phrase occurs when God appears to Moses in the burning bush. And God said to Moses,"I am who I am." Ex 3:14 (NJB)<back | next > |
