UCC Logo: Cross and Crown Collegeville, Pennsylvania, c. 20th century Steeple cross The Church House of the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference, United Church of Christ, Collegeville, Pennsylvania, prominently displays a three dimensional version of the logo of this denomination. The logo adapts a crown with crosses on top of a cross orb. Underneath the logo on their seal is a motto from Christ’s prayer in John 17:21, "That they may all be one." The cross orb sign is a centuries old image, showing the rule of Christ over the world. The crown and cross combination was prominent in William Penn's writings. One quote from his book No Cross, No Crown is, "No pain, no palm; no thorns, no throne; no gall, no glory; no cross, no crown." A Sunday School attendance program that began in England in the 19th century used a cross and crown symbol on certificates and pins as reward. On the pins, a red cross is inserted inside the crown rather than on top. < back | next > |
